Umm, like, what's my job again?

In an interview last month on MSNBC, Gov. Palin said:
As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?
What? We covered that in, what, the fourth grade? I guess I should have expected ignorance from her given her politics. But damn, that's a new low.

This is the person the Republicans want a heartbeat away from the Presidency?

  1. Especially when McCain's VP's job description would essentially be "check in to see if you're the president yet."

  2. Other than break tie votes in the Senate and be on the same side as the President in case of tragedy, there really isn't anything a Veep has to do. The job changes from President to President, and it's in that spirit that I took her question. What does the VP do every day, indeed? There's little.

I agree that Palin is underqualified, but I have no evidence that she's stupid. (I guess I don't believe all people in the other party are stupid, as your sentence "I guess I should have expected ignorance from her given her politics" indicates you believe. Surely you don't mean that, do you?)

  3. The more frightening thing to me is the Republican pundits asserting that VP is a totally unrelated job to President.

And as for Palin being stupid, she supports creationism being taught alongside and equal to evolutionary theory. That's a pretty thorough disconnect from reality right off the bat.

  4. TRP: I did say "ignorance" and not "stupidity". I'm not implying she's stupid, just ignorant. The religious right's vitriol thrives in an environment of ignorance and unquestioning faith.

Abner: While I completely agree she's disconnected from reality, I'm with TRP in that that doesn't indicate stupidity.

  5. Did NO ONE else hear the discussion on NPR the other day about how increasingly important the office of vice presidency has become in the last 20 years? It's more than just a back up president, but it's become a very influential and important position in terms of Congressional negotiations. And the idea of having a crackpot with virtually no experience in that position is kind of frightening.

  6. While I didn't hear the NPR story, all one has to do is look at how much Cheney has been able to do from that office.

Just the thought of someone as ignorant as Palin casting the tie-breaking vote in the Senate scares the hell out of me.
